Roger Y. Tsien, PhD
(February 1, 1952 – August 24, 2016)
Dr. Tsien was professor of Pharmacology and Chemistry & Biochemistry at University of California San Diego School of Medicine for 27 years. He was a co-recipient of the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry, together with Osamu Shimomura and Martin Chalfie, for discovery and development of green fluorescent protein. Dr. Tsien also pioneered calcium imaging, and developed a variety of small molecule probes and genetically encoded biosensors to spy on cells, tissues and organisms.
